The hunt is on for a gang of armed robbers who stole GHc1,000 worth of gold and a cash amount of GHc9,000 at the workplace of a gold dealer at Manso-Afraso in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region, following the arrest of the ring leader, Yaya Bashiru, on Friday.

Thirty-two-year-old Bashiru and his gang are said to have held four people (the boys of Kwame Sarfo Mensah, the gold buyer) at gunpoint in his office while he was away.

Supt Daniel Kwabena Amoako, the Manso Nkwanta Police Commander, said the gunmen stormed the gold merchant’s workplace shortly after one of them went there to inquire about the price of gold.

According to the police chief, the gangsters threatened staff with guns in the incident that occurred on September 12, 2015 before making away with the gold and cash.

He stated that Bashiru was arrested at his residence at Bechem Zongo in the Brong-Ahafo Region after weeks of surveillance.

Supt Amoako disclosed that the gold robber confessed to the crime during police interrogation, reportedly claiming that he was contracted by one Dada to execute the operation.

The police commander said detectives were looking for other members of the gang, describing the incident as an audacious, well-planned conspiracy.

He declared his commitment to ridding the Manso Nkwanta area of notorious gold robbers who have been terrorising business people in the district.

He explained that several hunter groups had been formed to help the police deal with all kinds of robberies as part of measures to achieve the desired results.

He praised his men for their team spirit and dedication to their work as law enforcers and urged them to keep the flame burning all the time.
