Gov't Accepting Illegal Migrants For A Fee

A human rights activist has accused the Kufuor Administration failing to stop what he calls the unhealthy practice of black immigrants in Europe being repatriated to Ghana for a fee, irrespective of their origin or nationality. Anthony Rau alias Kwabena Abebrese, who is a German citizen, with Ghanaian parentage said Ghana’s embassy in Germany is particularly guilty of colluding with the German authorities to dehumanize illegal black immigrants in contravention of German immigration laws.

Anthony Rau is in Ghana to contest the case for two Ghanaians who were repatriated and have been unable to return to Germany, even though their spouses still reside in the European country.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra Anthony Rau called for the removal of foreign minister Hackman Owusu Agyeman for his inability to tackle problems affecting Ghanaian immigrants abroad and prospective travelers wishing to leave the shores of Ghana.

“I just want to appeal to our people [that] we have to wake up… if we really want to get our rights then we have to make the efforts. The only effort [should come from] a good leader and the leader must not be Mr. Hackman because the man doesn’t know what he is doing.”

Anthony Rau said it is unfair that persons born of Ghanaian parentage with other countries’ citizenship have to pay one hundred dollars to enable them enter Ghana, if they do not possess entry visas. He said such people contribute immensely to the economy with the money they send to their families and businesses back home.

He called on government to stop paying lip service to the issue of dual citizenship for Ghanaians and to take more interest in protecting its nationals both home and abroad.
