Gov't urged to set up independent enquiry into Mobila's death

Tamale, Dec. 12, GNA - The Northern Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged the government to set up an independent commission to enquire into the circumstances that led to the arrest, detention and the transfer of the late Issah Mohammed Mobila to the Military and his subsequent death.

The NDC also urged the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to ensure that the due process of law was applied, especially the use of military in handling issues that were constitutionally preserved for the police.

In a statement issued to the press and signed by Alhaji Abudulai Haruna, a leading member of the NDC, it called on the REGSEC to put an immediate halt to the indiscriminate arrest, intimidations and brutality of innocent citizens in the Tamale Metropolis.

It also urged the REGSEC to ensure that a Medical Team be set up with the approval of the deceased family to carry out an autopsy on the body. The statement noted that the NDC was at a loss as to why the police should hand over a suspect to the military and why the suspect should be interrogated without being given the option of a legal counsel.
