Government asked to extend electricity to Essam

Essam (E/R), Aug. 14, GNA- Mr. Reginald Sackey, assembly member for the Essam Electoral Area, in the Birim Central Municipality, in the Eastern Region, on Wednesday appealed to government to assist the people to extend electricity to the area to facilitate socio-economic activities. He said the youth were contributing 10 Ghana Cedis each, while adults were paying 50 Ghana Cedis each, towards the project, adding that the people had already purchased eight out of the 56 low-tension poles required for the plan.

Mr. Sackey made the appeal at a meeting of the electrification project committee of Essam, to consider the imposition of additional levies on the people towards the implementation of electrification project. He said the people had also generated 1,500 Ghana Cedis through a

harvest in aid of the project. Mr. Collins Quaye, chairman of the committee, said: "even though this is a poor community, we have levied ourselves in addition to the harvest, since not even the municipal assembly is assisting us to acquire light". Nana Yaw Obiri II, Odikro of Essam, appealed to individuals and organisations to contribute to the execution of the project. Mr. William T. Sakyi, former assembly member for the area, appealed to the assembly to contribute to the project.
