The Ministry of Finance has released the salary arrears for validated teachers engaged between 2013 and 2016, Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed.

Addressing delegates at the 5th Quadrennial and 52nd National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) at Cape Coast on Thursday January 4, 2018, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said the Akufo-Addo government places a very high premium on education and would work assiduously to improve the working conditions of teachers.

“… I have good news for you, and this is why sometimes it’s better to get communication almost immediately. The good news is that the Minister of Finance released the monies for those allowances yesterday. So I have seen the letter and all the validated arrears for those 2013 to 2016 have been released...” Veep Bawumia indicated.

He further reiterated that, “it is a further demonstration of our convincement to education. We’re not just saying it, but we’re actually living it and practicalising it, and making sure that when we say that a motivated teacher sis key to delivering of the vision of the president of the government, it is very key.”

The issues of validation and arrears have bedeviled the educational sector for years with newly engaged teachers bemoaning the long delay, sometimes up to 3 years before receiving their salaries.

This has led to several agitations and featured prominently in the welcome address of GNAT President Philippa Larsen.
