Government to consider the creation of a new district for Upper Manya

Asesewa (E/R), Aug. 31, GNA - The Government would consider the possibility of creating a new district for the Upper Manya Krobo Traditional Area in the Eastern Region.

President John Agyekum Kufuor, who announced this on Tuesday, said the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) would crosscheck on whether the criteria for the creation of a district would be feasible before a decision would be taken.

He was addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people of the area at Asesewa on the last day of his four-day official visit to the Region. President Kufuor said in case the area could not fulfil the criteria it would be given a special attention because of their contribution to food production.

"Upper Manya Krobo deserves more than it had received from the national cake due to its contribution to national development", he said. He announced that the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MOYES) would also consider the possibility of upgrading facilities at the day Senior Secondary School in the area to be turned into a boarding school while the Asesewa-Akentan road would soon be awarded on contract for tarring.

Nene Dome Siako, Chief of Suisi, who read an address on behalf of Nene Sakite, Konor of Manya Krobo, appealed to the Government for the payment of compensation to the people on the release of their lands for the construction of the Akosombo Dam.

He called for the improvement of the road network; water supply systems and provision of other basic amenities in the area.
