Accra, May 7, GNA - Mr Henry Ford Kamel, Deputy Minister, Lands and Natural Resources, on Wednesday commended government for its intervention that led to the release of Mr Daniel Baidoo from Libyan prison.
In a release signed by Mr Kamel it said this showed a practical demonstration of fellow feeling and clear manifestation of the President's assurance to Ghanaians that he was going to be the father for all He said Mr Baidoo regained his freedom following the intervention of the vice President John Mahama in consultation with President John Atta Mills.
Under Libyan law it is an offence to witness or try to convert a Libyan into another religious. Mr Kamel, who is also a Member of Parliament for Buem, expressed gratitude to the Libyan authorities for releasing Baidoo when the Vice President appealed for clemency.
"The Libyan authorities have demonstrated the true spirit of African unity and oneness."
Mr Kamel appealed to the government to help other Ghanaians who are languishing in prisons in other countries. "And it is the hope of Ghanaians that the NDC government under its liberal policies, would help ensure the freedom of Ghanaian citizens within and outside the country." he added. A 35 year-old Ghanaian man was jailed in Libya for 25 years for attempting to convert Libyans to Christianity. 7 May 09
