Govt worried over misunderstanding on location of new district

capitals

Sefwi-Essam (W/R), June 3, GNA - Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, has appealed to the chiefs and people of Sefwi-Essam and neighbouring Debiso in the Juaboso-Bia District to remain calm and accept the decision of the Government on the sitting of a district capital for the newly created Bia District.

He said the Government had noted with much concern the conflicts and misunderstandings that followed the location of capitals of newly created districts since they tended to frustrate the efforts to enhance local government administration.

The Regional Minister said these when he addressed the chiefs and people of Essam and Debiso at separate forums on Tuesday as part of his three-day inspection tour of the Juabeso-Bia District. He stressed the need for cooperation between the two communities and to avoid any behaviour that would result in conflicts to mar their relationship.

Mr. Aidoo said the creation of the new district would further help to accelerate the development of the area and urged the chiefs and opinion leaders of the two communities to find a way to address the issue. Nana Afro Kwaw II, Chief of Debiso, pledged the cooperation of his people to resolve the issue and expressed the hope that the Government would site the district capital at Debiso in honour of a promise that was made during the 2000 political campaign.

At Essam, the people argued that they had the needed infrastructure and, therefore, the town was more suitable to become the district capital. Nana Afro Kwaw appealed to the Government to improve the road network in the area and also called for the provision of potable water for the community.
