A 65-year-old grandfather and his wife have been arrested by the Nungua office of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police Service for allegedly forcing their 11-year-old granddaughter to sit on boiled water for bed wetting.
The couple, James Agbemevor and Christiana Torkornu, 50, allegedly forced the victim to sit in the boiled water as punishment for wetting her bed.
The victim (name withheld), who suffered severe burns around her genitalia, was currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.
Narrating the story to journalists, DSP Margaret Sapati-Agbemabiese, the Kpeshie DOVVSU Coordinator, said the incident happened on January 3, 2013 at their Nungua Sankara Estate residence where the couple lived with the victim.
Information gathered indicated that the victim is the granddaughter of James Agbemevor.
According to reports, the victim always wet her bed anytime she slept.
On the night in question, when the victim wet her bed her grandparents got infuriated.
The following morning, Madam Torkornu allegedly boiled hot water and asked the victim to sit in it.
When the victim refused to obey that unorthodox command, the harridan pushed her into the hot water while her husband sat apathetically.
After the child had sustained the injures, the couple did not send her to the hospital.
A neighbour who realized the plight of the girl reported the matter to the Nungua Police.
When police personnel visited the house on Tuesday afternoon, the child was seen alone lying in a supine position as she could not sit following the burns on her buttocks.
She was immediately taken to the Police Hospital for medical attention while the police left a message for the grandparents.
On Wednesday morning, the police managed to grab the couple to the station for interrogation.
The two explained that they did that to discourage the girl from wetting her bed.
