HABITAT To Build 1000 Houses In One Year

Accra, (Greater Accra) 5 Nov., One thousand two-bedroom houses, each costing two million cedis only, will be completed in 60 rural communities by the end of this year. Miss Naana Pra, chairperson of the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity Ghana (HHG), an NGO, which is constructing the houses, said since 1987 when HHG entered Ghana they have built more than 900 flats. She said the houses measure 24 feet by 20 feet adding ''we hope to reach 1,000 by the end of this year''. Breman Asikuma, Fosu South, Gomoa East, Assinman and Komenda, all in the Central region, are some of the beneficiary communities. The rest include Adom in the Greater Accra region, Asadame in the Volta region and Baanuase in the Ashanti region, Okuapeman in the Western region and Subiri in the Eastern region. According to Miss Pra, most people in need of houses are in the rural area where the chiefs are always willing to offer big parcels of land. She said they have difficulty in coming to the urban areas due to the rampant land litigations and massive government acquisition of stool lands. ''We believe that when people have a good place to sleep, a third of their life problems is solved.''
