Handover establishment of 200 SHS to churches – Presby Moderator

The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey has called on government to handover the establishment of the 200 community day Senior High Schools (SHS) to the churches.

According to him, the Churches in Ghana are well placed to deliver the establishment of these SHS timely, prudently and excellently than the government because they have the track-record and experience in the educational sector.

“Government should channel the funds for the establishment of the 200 SHS to churches like the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, because we understand and know the field very well when it comes to education and can deliver best” he declared.

Rev. Prof. Martey, who is also the Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, made these statements after Unibank had donated a double cabin Nissan Nevara Pick-Up to the Presbyterian University College at the ongoing 14th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Abetifi in the Eastern Region of Ghana last Saturday.

He recalled that, the Churches in Ghana were the first to start the establishment of education in the country, and has continued to do so efficiently and effectively, adding that, government must consider these track-records and equip the churches in Ghana with the needed resources to set-up these schools.

Presenting the vehicle, the Chief Executive Officer of Unibank, Mr. Felix Nyankopong commended the church for its enormous contributions to the development of education in the country.

He continued that, the bank believes in the provision of quality, affordable and accessible education and the Presbyterian Church is showing the way in that direction which is worth commending.

Mr. Nyamkopong assured the church of the banks continued relationship in providing efficient financial services to its numerous congregations across the country.

Education is an integral part of the church's responsibility to the communities it operates in and Ghana. The church has 487 kindergarten and nursery schools, 984 primary schools and 399 junior high schools. The church also has over 30 SHS, 40 private schools, 6 vocational institutions, 5 teacher training colleges, a research centre. Apart from the Presbyterian University College, the Church also has the Akrofi Christaller Institute for Theology and Missions which is the first university to get a Presidential Charter to award Doctorate Degrees.
