Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South Constituency Haruna Iddrisu has opened up for the first time in a while about rumours that he is harbouring presidential ambitions.

He said he once thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for increasing “my political share value” after a praise showered on him during the February 21 State of the Nation address by the president.

President Akufo-Addo had commended Mr Iddrisu for his steady rise on the political log and offered him his wishes for the future. “It is clear [Haruna Iddrisu] has an important future in Ghanaian politics.

I want to assure him and the leadership of House of both sides that I will cooperate fully with Parliament to enhance the governance of nation to be able to do the business of the House effectively,” the president said in his first State of the Nation address.

In what he calls “brutally frank and courageous statement”, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament said he is still working at his political future. Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on Saturday, the former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations said he will leave his future “to the grace of God”.

“My role now is to be Minority Leader, to galvanise the party in Parliament to provide a credible, constructive opposition that positions the [NDC] as a credible alternative to government,” he told Winston Amoah.

“And I am sure we are on course and we will do our utmost best not to disappoint the Ghanaian people in holding this government accountable.”
