Following reports of gunfire in Nyankpala in the Northern Region, the Member of Parliament for the Tamale South Constituency, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed his disappointment and called for immediate action from security agencies.

Addressing the incident on TV3, Haruna Iddrisu urged security forces to fulfil their duty and apprehend those responsible for the violence. “Between now and 5 PM, there has to be a heightened security alert in a number of constituencies, particularly Tolon, Gariga, Gushegu, and others, where the NPP appears to be facing defeat,” he stated.

The former Minority Leader also criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of being desperate to retain power.

“The NPP will stop at nothing. They are thirsty and desperate for power. They are losing it,” he alleged.

Haruna Iddrisu expressed confidence in the electoral prospects of John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), both in the Northern Region and across the country.

The 2024 general elections are underway in 276 constituencies nationwide, with 18.8 million registered voters expected to cast their ballots. Among these voters, 48% are male and 52% female, with the youth making up 55% of the total voter population, underscoring their significant role in this election.

Thirteen presidential candidates are contesting the elections, including nine representing political parties and four independents. Additionally, 801 parliamentary candidates are vying for 276 seats, including 111 independent candidates.

The elections are being conducted at 40,976 polling centres, with 328 already used for the Special Voting exercises held on December 2 and December 5, 2024.

Haruna Iddrisu's comments underscore concerns about maintaining peace and security during the electoral process, particularly in regions prone to tensions.
