Haulage drivers to suspend services

Tema, May 02, GNA - The General Haulage and Transporters Association of Ghana (GHTAG), on Monday threatened to boycott neighbouring landlocked countries if the persistent harassment of their members continued in those countries.

The Association complained that members who transport transit goods from the Tema Harbour to Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and other countries were often molested without provocation. Mr Adamu Yussif Danjumah, chairman of the GHTAG who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Tema called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs to intervene on their behalf since members were fed up with the inhuman treatment.

He accused the police force in these countries for the arbitrary arrest and detention of drivers citing an incident at the at Dakola, border town in Burkina Faso, where some drivers were detained with their haulage trucks on the orders of the local Police District Commander, over alleged differences between a Ghanaian Clearing Agent and his Burkinabe counterpart.

He said about two months ago, 72 drivers of the Association were detained for about three weeks and subjected to inhuman treatment. 02 May 05
