Heads of UN Agencies Call on Kufuor

Heads of UN agencies in the country have pledged their support and commitment towards the implementation of the government development agenda.

They would there fore help deepen democracy ensure good governance promote a sustainable human-centred development and a vibrant private sector and support the fight against corruption with the ultimate aim of reducing poverty in the country.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Alfred Sallia Fawundu, made this pledge yesterday during a courtesy call on President J. A. Kufuor by the head of all the UN specialised agencies in Ghana. He said their move stems from the realisation that the assistance and support by the UN would be much needed at this present time of national reconstruction.

Besides, the President's personal pledges to govern by example and to hold others in authority accountable to the people of Ghana have set the tone for a dispensation that calls for the total support of all. President Kufuor, on his part described the UN as an organisation that represents a vision that puts humanity at the centre of its activities.

He said it is a healthy development for the UN to be highly enthused with Ghana's desire to Tran types and forms of support required. President Kufuor gave the assurance that the government would give meaning to whatever it pledges to do, especially in the area of human rights, the rule of law and transparency in governance. He said Ghana did not take the decision to join the HIPC initiative for long.

We will move every available resource at our disposal to move from this level within the shortest possible time, he said. Mr Peter Harrold, World Bank Country Representative was of the view that with the right policies and support from the UN, Ghana could emerge as a Highly Improved Progressive Country.
