The Health Ministry has asked agitated workers of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital to give it three months to investigate allegations they have levelled against the Medical Director of the facility.

President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Kwaku Asante Krobea says the Ministry would use the period to assess the claims of the staff and demand answers from Dr Eugene Dordoye on his conduct.

Staff of the facility laid down their tools last week Thursday after the Health Ministry failed to act on their petition for the removal of the Medical Director, Dr Eugene Dordoye.

Dr Dordoye has been accused, among others, of being blatantly disrespectful to the staff, abusing the rights of the staff, misappropriation of funds and gross disrespect to senior staff of the Ankaful Hospital.

However, a letter of apology by the Director infuriated the staff who maintained he was not sincere and only apologised because he had been pushed to the wall. They, therefore, demanded his immediate removal.

This forced the Health Ministry to hold a closed-door meeting with the aggrieved workers in an attempt to resolve the impasse.

Speaking to Ghanaweb.com after the meeting, Kwaku Asante Krobea said the demands of the aggrieved staff needed to go through a consideration stage and due process to be acted on.

“What the nurses are demanding is the removal of the Medical Director, and it is not a simple thing to do because he is officially appointed to the place and so allegations cannot simply remove him unless they are authenticated,” he said.

He added that the many things to be considered would include how the conduct as claimed by the workers affected the smooth running of the psychiatric hospital.

Mr. Asante-Krobea said within the three-month period of investigation, the Medical Director would be asked to respect the nurses and conduct himself in such a manner not to incur the wrath of the staff.

According to him, the nurses have agreed to this timeframe and have promised to work with the embattled Medical Director.

The Medical Director of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Eugene Dordoye is not new to this kind of controversy over his style of leadership. He was removed as head in two previous instances where he was appointed as head of a government hospital over similar claims by staff.
