Heavy security presence as EC prepares to collate results for 4 disputed constituencies

The Ghana Police Service has increased security at the Greater Accra office of the Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the collation of outstanding polling station results for four contested constituencies on January 5, 2025.

This heightened security follows a court order directing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure adequate protection for the Electoral Commission during the collation process.

The Electoral Commission is set to finalise the results for the Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North constituencies, in compliance with an order from the Accra High Court.

In a ruling on January 4, 2025, Justice Forson Agyapong of the High Court instructed the EC to collate the results from two outstanding polling stations in Tema Central and add them to the previously counted results.

This decision came after the EC’s failure to include the results from all polling stations in the constituency before making an official declaration.

Regarding the Okaikwei Central constituency, the court was informed that results from 31 polling stations were still pending collation.

Similarly, in Ablekuma North, 62 polling stations out of 281 remain uncollated, with 219 stations already completed.

The court's ruling follows the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) request for a writ of mandamus to compel the EC to complete the collation of results in these constituencies.

The NPP argued that the results in these constituencies were incomplete, meaning a proper declaration could not be made.

The court agreed with the NPP’s position, granting their mandamus application and ordering the EC to finish all collation processes before any result declarations.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed a notice of appeal in response to the Accra High Court's decision, which granted the NPP's application to compel the EC to complete the collation and declaration of results in four disputed constituencies.
