Help provide quality education - Minister urges society

Accra, Nov 6, GNA - Ms Elizabeth Ohene, Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, on Sunday noted that even though dedicated and committed teachers play a critical role in the life of pupils, society had a responsibility in providing quality education for children. "Although some attended deplorable schools in the past, they have been successful," she said and stated that even though some parents attended schools with deplorable conditions they achieved good results because society supported them.

Ms Ohene made these remarks at the 40th Anniversary of the Madina Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Trinity Parish, in Accra. She said she was struck by the fact that all the winners of yesterday's Best Teacher Awards ceremony were teachers who took special interests in the community and their pupils and were making the best out of challenging situations.

The Minister commended the EP Church for its efforts in the delivery of quality education and pledged the Ministry's support for the Church.

She expressed the hope that the three-billion-cedi school complex to be built by the Church would train children to be disciplined, respectful and environmentally friendly," adding that, it was only when it had done this that the Church could claim to be special.

The Reverend Francis Amenu, Parish Pastor of the Church, in a welcoming address said the theme, "And some other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain" makes it important on Christians to translate the grace of God bestowed on them into their daily activities. "This duly performed should factor in significant contributions particularly in the areas of medico-educational and socio-economic needs of the community." he said.

He said in spite of daunting challenges the Church was making efforts to bring hope to its members and the society. Rev Amenu mentioned the three-billion-cedi school complex, job creation opportunities, training for the youth, unemployed widows and the physically challenged as well as other support both in cash and in kind.

He expressed gratitude to institutions and individuals who had responded to the Church's appeal through donations and prayers, which had made the Church what it is today.

The Right Reverend Livingston Komla Buama, Moderator of the EP Church-Ghana, in a sermon urged the congregation to resist the temptation of focusing purely on the outward ceremonial observance of the celebration.

"Among other things may this celebration serve as a unique opportunity for us to engage in thanksgiving, sober reflection, stock-taking and goal setting and may we be guided to put in place strategic plans that can lead to attainable goals", he added. Nov. 06 05
