Help solve Gomoa Lom water problem - Veep

Lome, Jan 16, GNA - The Chiefs and the People of Gomoa Lome in the Central Region, have appealed to the Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama to intervene to solve the perennial water problem in the town. Mr Shamuna Iddriss, Assemblyman for the area making the appeal at the annual Akwambo festival said the Vice President during a visit the town last year assured the people that the government would ensure that the water problem was a thing of the past.

He said after the visit official from Ghana Water Company made an estimate of 245 million cedis for the project, which never took off. The town has been hit by the severe water shortage and people travel long distances to Gomoa Dawurampong and Afransi in search of water with a bucket selling for between 1000 and 1500 cedis, he said.

School children go through a hectic time before getting water in the morning a situation forcing people to resort to unclean streams and wells, which lead to an epidemic, the Assemblyman said.

Mr Iddriss praised the government for the provision of electricity and appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Transport to rehabilitate and expand the road linking Lome to Gomoa Nduam.

He called for Assembly's help to construct a market and toilet facility Ms Joyce Aidoo, District Chief Executive for Gomoa, appealed to the people to support the government to find a solution to their water, road and other problems.

She stated that the District Assembly would supply them with roofing sheets and cement for the construction of the market and toilet while the Regional Highway Engineer had been contacted for plans to facilitate transportation of goods and services to marketing centres. The DCE urged parents to send their children to school and help curb the rise in HIV/AIDS cases.

Ms Aidoo presented 29-inch Colour Television set to the chiefs and the people to enable the children to have access to the distance-learning programme to improve the quality education. Nana Ayireku Andoh, Chief of the town cautioned the youth against alcoholism, drug abuse and other social vices to enable them to become responsible adults in future.
