The High Court in Tamale has issued an injunction against the Economic Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Tia Abdul Kabiru Mahama, from presenting himself as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Walewale constituency in the North East Region.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the judgement of the Tamale High Court presided over by Justice Richard Kugyapaw, was on a challenge to the results of the NPP parliamentary primaries for Walewale filed by the incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hajia Lariba Zuweratu.

The economic advisor to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP, was declared the winner of the primaries, which were held in January 2024, after he polled 345 votes to Hajia Lariba's 338 votes.

However, the Walewale MP rejected the election outcome and filed an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court, alleging electoral irregularities and malpractice by the party, Dr. Kabiru, and the Electoral Commission.

She filed the injunction to prevent Dr. Kabiru from holding himself as the winner of the January primaries.

The NPP, which is the third defendant in the case, was initially unhappy with the actions of the MP, accusing Hajia Lariba of violating the party's constitution by not exhausting internal conflict resolution mechanisms before approaching the court.

Supporters of the party in the Walewale constituency have issued a stern warning to the leadership of the party against imposing a candidate on them, saying any attempt to do so would have an impact on the party’s fortunes in the upcoming December 7, 2024 election in the constituency.
