Winneba (C/R) Sept.1, GNA - Twenty-five canoes and some fishing nets costing several millions of cedis were destroyed in high tidal waves, which hit Winneba and other communities on Monday night. This has brought fishing activities in the affected communities to a standstill.
Neenyi Kweku Mbri, Chief fisherman of Winneba speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday said some nets belonging to the affected fishermen were still under the sea.
Neenyi Mbri said a search party had been organised in Winneba to retrieve the nets.
He said that at midnight on Monday high tidal waves accompanied by strong winds hit the sea in Winneba and other communities. Neenyi Mbri said in the process most of the canoes anchored on the beach were destroyed while others capsized.
He therefore, appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for assistance to enable the affected fishermen cater for their dependants.
