Highways Authority has no power to remove ramps

Agona Swedru (C/R), March 19, GNA- The Agona District Co-ordinating Director Mr G.B.L. Siilo, has expressed concern about the inability on the part of officials of the Ghana Highways Authority in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya and Agona districts to recommend the removal of speed ramps erected by the communities on Winneba/Swedru road.

He said the Agona District Assembly has agreed to provide fuel, vehicles and security personnel but officials of the Ghana Highways Authority are not willing because it has no legal backing to undertake that exercise.

Mr Siilo was speaking to Mr Johnson Amofa, Awutu-Effutu-Senya and Agona districts Engineer of the Ghana Highways Authority about the Assembly's readiness to offer support to him.

He said the Agona District Security Council took the decision at its last sitting to help GHA to remove the ramps.

Mr Siilo who is also secretary to the District Security Council told He regretted that all attempts to persuade Mr Amofa to help the security men to go and execute the job had been in vain.

The chiefs and people in the five towns on the Winneba/Swedru road had erected speed ramps saying the townsfolk were at risk with "reckless and irresponsible drivers".

When Mr Amofa was contacted he confirmed the story, but said the officials of GHA had had a bitter experience at Gomoa Enyeme and Baafikrom in the Mfansteman districts in removing ramps.
