Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, has described the election of Efua Ghartey as the president of the Ghana Bar Association and Victoria Barth as the vice president as historic achievements for the country.

According to her, this moment reinforces the narrative that leadership roles are not exclusively for men but are also attainable for women.

In a post shared on her official X account, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang extended her congratulations to Efua Ghartey and Victoria Barth.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, who aspires to be Ghana’s first female vice president, expressed optimism that the two women in the legal profession will champion significant reforms and enhance advocacy in their field.

“Hearty congratulations to Efua Ghartey, the first woman to be elected as president of the Ghana Bar Association. Special mention to Victoria Barth who is Vice President.

“This historic achievement is one that we are proud of because it strengthens the narrative about expanding leadership beyond a single gender in our national life.

“I wish both of them the very best in this role and trust that they will bring important reforms to the legal profession in our dear country while improving advocacy. Efua na Victoria, Mmo na adwuma!,” she wrote.

The Ghana Bar Association made history by electing two females to top executive positions on Wednesday September 11, 2024.

Efua Ghartey, an accomplished lawyer at the Bar and wife of Joe Ghartey, Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, with close to thirty years’ experience at the Bar, secured 1,208 votes, defeating her opponent, Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who garnered 1,060 votes.

Victoria Barth, another highly accomplished legal professional, was elected as National Vice President of the GBA.

She is known for her stellar academic career at the Ghana School of Law, where she has mentored many young lawyers and was a key part of the legal team that represented President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 2021 election petition.
