The driver of a BMW Salon car, Francis Kwaku Poku, who allegedly crashed into a police barricade and hit a pedestrian to death instantly, has been arraigned for the offence.

The suspect who left the victim Amanyo Tagbo to his fate and ran further into two containers was dragged to an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Afi Agbaney Kudomor and charged with reckless driving and negligently causing harm.

He pleaded not guilty and has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with two sureties while the case has been adjourned to September 30, 2015.

Narrating the events leading to the arrest of the suspect, the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Georgina Agbodeka, told the court that on January 6, 2012 at about at 9.00pm the suspect was driving a BMW saloon car with registration number GW 3900 Q from Amrahia to Adenta.

She said on reaching Frafraha, he drove in a manner not expected of a careful and competent driver, adding that he drove with very little regard to human life.

According to her, Poku drove at a top speed and crashed into a police barricade and veered off the road into the opposite lane and in the process hit a certain Amanyo Tagbo who was then crossing the road from the other side.

Amanyo Tagbo died instantly, the prosecutor told the court.

The inspector noted that Poku further skidded off the road and crashed into two containers damaging them and explained that the suspect just left the pedestrian to his fate.

She said the driver escaped and a report was lodged with the police and the vehicle was traced and the suspect arrested.

The police officer indicated that after careful investigation the police forwarded a duplicate docket to the Attorney-General’s department and the suspect was arraigned after police concluded investigations.
