Hohoe district records increase in pregnancies

Miss Victoria Butias, the Hohoe District Nurse in-charge of Reproductive Health, has said the district recorded 4628 pregnancies last year as compared to 4103 in 1999.

She disclosed this at a one-day workshop on HIV/AIDS, in Hohoe, organised by PROLINK, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), for market women, nursing mothers and schoolgirls, during which the female condom was launched.

Miss Butias who is also in-charge of Family Planning expressed concern about the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy in the district.

She said the district health management team has drawn up a programme to sensitise parents on the need to control the sexual behaviour of their children.

Miss Bernice Helor, Executive Director of NGO, said the prevalence of HIV/AIDS puts everyone at risk and said PROLINK has embarked on a programme in the district to prevent the spread of the disease.

It includes the counselling, research and public education on the prevention and control of the disease.
