General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong says President Nana Akufo-Addo might have been misunderstood when he responded to a question on the legality of homosexuality in an interview with Aljazeera.

President Akufo-Addo was unable to clearly state his position on homosexuality in an interview with Qatar-based Aljazeera.

He noted that if activism in favour of the legalization of homosexuality heightens, that could trigger a change in Ghana’s laws.

“I don’t believe that in Ghana, so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say: ‘Change it [the law], let’s then have a new paradigm in Ghana,” he told the interviewer.

Commenting on the issue in an interview with ghanaweb.com, Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong have asked Ghanaians to give the president the benefit of the doubt and wait for further explanations.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong, however wants an explanation from someone who really understood what the President meant to so as to calm nerves of Ghanaians.

‘’We don’t want to behave that we understood that statement thoroughly, President are like say traditional leaders, chiefs. They speak in parables, then they have people who will come and say oh, you heard Nana Nii saying this, no no no he didn’t mean this he meant that,’’ he explained.

Stating Aljazeera as an example, Rev. Opuni-Frimpong said their report on the interview had different angle, with their focus being on politics in Ghana, Zimbabwe, among others.

“So maybe say Minister of Information, normally the President has people like these in his office. Minister of Communications or because we have Gender and Social Protection unit, they can also come and help explain,” he stressed.
