Koforidua, Dec. 23, GNA- The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs has appealed to the government to allocate sufficient resources to the Houses of Chiefs and Traditional Councils to enable them discharge their statutory duties effectively.
The chiefs expressed concern about unattractive conditions of service for the staff and said it was only the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, among the ten Regional Houses, that had a counsel attached to it.
The counsel, they said, was also assigned duties in Ashanti, Volta, Greater Accra, Central Regions and "sometimes the National House of Chiefs."
The President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, the Konor of Yilo Krobo, Nene Narh Dawutey Ologo the VI, said this when he addressed an end-of-year meeting of the House at Koforidua on Thursday. He noted that the situation was affecting the hearing of cases pending before the Judicial Committees.
Nene Ologo commended the government for the recent increases in the allowances of chiefs and hoped the exercise would continue and urged Nananom to ensure speedy disposal of cases.
He asked the Houses to embrace the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism to help clear the backlog of cases pending before them. Nene Ologo, on behalf of the chiefs and people in the region, congratulated President J.A. Kufuor and Vice President Aliu Mahama, for their re-election and prayed that they would be able to do all that they could not do during their first term of office.
He also commended the presidential candidates of other parties, which contested the elections for accepting defeat honourably and making sure that peace prevailed in the country.
Nene Ologo again congratulated the electorate for displaying political maturity.
On the HIV/AIDS, he asked members of the House to get more involved in educating their people on how to reduce the prevalent rate. The Registrar of the House, Mr Kwasi Sarkodie Opoku, appealed for improved conditions of service including residential accommodation for staff.
