The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old suspected armed robber who claimed he was on a hunting expedition at the time of his arrest.

The suspect, Mohammed Gargo, steel bender, was arrested by the Police Foot Patrol Team at New York, a suburb of Zenu in the Kpone-Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region.

A search conducted on him revealed a locally manufactured pistol, ammunition and a cutlass.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Tema Regional Police Command, in the early hours of Wednesday, March 15, 2017, a Police Patrol Team that was deployed for Zenu-Atadeka observed the suspicious movement of the suspect.

According to her, the suspect, who was on a Royal Sport motorbike with registration number M-16-GR 746 at New York, a suburb of Zenu, near Ashaiman upon spotting the patrol team reversed immediately and moved at top speed in order to escape arrest.

Luck eluded the suspect, as he was surrounded by the police, who subsequently arrested him, she said.

ASP Obeng mentioned that the police discovered the aforementioned weapons, which have been impounded to boost investigations.

“When he was asked why he was wielding such offensive weapons, he mentioned that he was going for hunting in the night in the municipality which heightened the suspicion of the police,” Tema Police spokeswoman pointed out.

She said the suspect was currently in police custody assisting in investigations.
