Attorney-General and Minister of Justice-designate Dr. Dominic Ayine appeared well-prepared to address challenging questions during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The former law lecturer turned politician faced a wide range of legal questions during the vetting session, which lasted over three hours.
Dr. Ayine, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, expressed surprise when the MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib—a trained lawyer and his former student—posed what he considered a fundamental question.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib, a first-term MP, a trained lawyer who had already asked two prior questions, concluded with the following:
"Dr. Ayine, my final question is: What kinds of agreements require parliamentary approval under Article 181(5) of the 1992 Constitution?"
Dr. Ayine responded, "I am surprised that my former student is asking me this fundamental question. Well, they include loans and international economic or business transactions to which the Government of Ghana is a party."
Dr Ayine’s academic career is marked by impactful teaching and research. As a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, he has mentored countless students and contributed significantly to the development of legal education in the country.
His areas of expertise include International Trade Law, Investment Law, and Constitutional Law, subjects on which he has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and academic texts.
