The Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has questioned President Nana Akufo-Addo about whether he will now hand over power to President-elect John Mahama.

In May, President Akufo-Addo called on first-time voters to register during the 2024 Limited Voters' Registration Exercise so they could vote massively against the flagbearer of the opposition NDC, former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the President, Mahama would destroy the gains his government had made if he returned to power. He, therefore, urged Ghanaian voters to elect Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, as his successor to ensure the continuation of his administration's achievements.

“The registration has started; I urge all persons yet to register to do so. Your vote is your power.

“I can't hand over to someone I defeated twice and who opposes everything I do; he will destroy the work I have done,” President Akufo-Addo was quoted as saying while addressing supporters at a mini-rally in Dobro, in the Greater Accra Region.

He added, “Vote for Dr. Bawumia; I have worked with him for the past seven and a half years. I have confidence in him; I know he can continue the good work.”

President Akufo-Addo further stated that his successor would not be his predecessor, John Mahama, whom he had "removed" from office. He also promised to return to the area with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer and his intended successor.

However, in an interview on TV3 on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, monitored by GhanaWeb, Malik Basintale criticized President Akufo-Addo's comments and urged politicians to be cautious with their statements ahead of elections.

“…You are talking as if you are in the minds of the over 30 million Ghanaians. Somebody says if the NDC wins, kill me. My brother, pre-election comments are dangerous. Someone swore, even President Akufo-Addo, that he would never hand over power to John Mahama. Mr. Akufo-Addo, Sir, John Mahama has been elected President. Ghanaians have made their decision. Mahama defeated Bawumia by over 1.6 million votes. Who will you hand over power to? I am asking him now. He congratulated John Mahama. I thought he said he would never hand over to Mahama. Look, let’s be mindful of the comments we make,” Basintale said.
