Nana Obiri Boahen, a former Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, has declared his full support for Sarah Adwoa Safo over her recent outbursts about what she described as unfair treatments meted out to her by the New Patriotic Party, (NPP).
“Adwoa Safo did nothing wrong. I will stand by Adwoa Safo against Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the NPP on this matter. Most of the things she said were factual. Instead of calling her privately to calm her down and explore ways to patch up, the party issues a public statement and follows it with a query for her,” he said on Okay FM on March 21, 2025.
Obiri Boahen indicated that the explosive interviews by the former MP for Dome-Kwabenya on selected media platforms uncovered many secrets needed to diagnose the problem that caused the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 Election.
He stated that he was hearing for the first time through Adwoa Safo’s media discourses that some NPP MPs petitioned against Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye as the candidate to contest Alban Bagbin for the speakership position in Parliament.
“Do you know that this is the first time I’m hearing that some MPs petitioned against Aaron Mike Oquaye contesting for the speakership position?
“If she hadn’t come out to say it in her recent interviews, we would all have been kept in the dark. Is this how you rebuild a party?” he asked rhetorically.
He questioned the credibility of the former Speaker of Parliament and demanded why they would allow him to chair the 11-member committee set up to investigate the 2024 electoral defeat, given the opposition from some legislators in the party.
He stated that the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration sidelined experienced party members who were ready and willing to help the party stay in power.
“Do you know that I was never called for any major communication meeting during the campaign season? I can swear that I didn’t even know where the national campaign office was. I remember only visiting Bawumia’s campaign office about twice or so. But nobody called me to make inputs during the electioneering season. So, I also sat in my corner and minded my business,” he said.
Asked if he was unfazed by a query from the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee for boldly declaring these facts, he stated that he could not be tamed for pointing out weaknesses in the party that led to their abysmal performance in the 2024 Election.
“It takes a few courageous people like myself and Adwoa Safo to come out to point out the wrongs. The party does not feed me. I feed myself, so they can’t gag me,” he said.
