The former Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Samia Yaa Christina Nkrumah, has commented on the debate regarding her father's role as part of, or the sole founder of Ghana.

Ghana's visionary president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was a prominent member of the famous 'Big Six' leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM’s Starr Chat programme on September 5, 2024, Samia Nkrumah indicated that the debate about her father being the founder of Ghana has already been settled.

She asserted that the fact that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is the only Ghanaian who has a day set aside to celebrate him settles the debate.

“Kwame Nkrumah is the founder of Ghana… I believe without a shred of doubt that Kwame Nkrumah is the founder of Ghana. But having said that, I’ve always said that it doesn’t matter if others disagree.

“...We’ve settled it. We have Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, the 21st of September, which is our father’s birthday. And no other figure in Ghana has that,” she said.

Samia Nkrumah, who is also a former MP for the Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region, described her father as a visionary who laid the foundation of Ghana as a country.

“Politically speaking, my dad was a prophet. I believe so because he saw well into the future, and he organised, he wrote, he was a philosopher, and of course, he led our country. He laid the foundation for what Ghana is today, and above all, he wrote everything – what he thought, what he believed in – and that is so important for the younger generation.

“If you are in doubt about anything at all that he did or said, read his books. He gave us the guidelines, and I think the ultimate solution for Africans to attain our dignity is for us to unite,” Samia explained.

She, however, indicated that her father has not received enough recognition for all the things he has done for the country.

The former legislator suggested that the country would honour her father if his books were studied in its educational institutions.

“The day when his books become part of the curriculum, the day when his books are read, and people are familiar with his ideas, agree or disagree with him, then Ghana indeed would have done him justice,” she stated.
