President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s argument that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah cannot be solely accorded with founding Ghana has been disputed by the former Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, Alex Abban.

According to Alex Abban, that assertion cannot be accepted because Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s name has been firmly etched in history as Ghana’s founder.

He, however, acknowledged President Akufo-Addo’s sentiments that the other contributors to Ghana’s independence cannot be sidelined.

Alex Abban said he believes that the other founding fathers must be given recognition for their various roles played and collective efforts in achieving independence.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, he said “I am in a difficult position because I cannot agree with the president. I cannot agree with him but I agree with the statements that he made that a lot of people fought for independence.

“… So, for us to think that anybody who founded the nation did not have a team of lieutenants, we will be wrong but obviously when history is being written when names are being mentioned one person will stand the pride of place, will stand tall,” he is quoted as saying by citiewsroom.com.

His comment follows President Akufo-Addo’s assertion that the founding of Ghana was a collective effort and should not be attributed solely to Dr Nkrumah.

During his 2024 Founders’ Day address to the populace, he said; “I speak to you this evening, rejecting completely, the notion that Ghana was founded by one man. While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge for ourselves that respect that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations.”
