President John Dramani Mahama has said despite the continuous and scathing attacks on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, he’s enjoined by the constitution to still keep her at post till her tenure expires.
“You might not like her but she’s the EC chair; I cannot remove her,” Mr. Mahama said in an interaction with some Ghanaians in UK.
The EC chair has come under intense pressure off-late vis-à-vis the credibility of Ghana’s electoral roll in the lead up to the November polls.
She’s has also been flaked for some administrative decisions she made on behalf of the commission, especially by changing the symbol of the EC that had the Coat of Arms and introducing a whole new logo for the commission, a decision many has described as “useless” and a misplaced priority that will not impact on the credibility of the elections at stake.
But, the President has said the EC chair has safety and security of tenure, hence he’s in no position to terminate such appointment eventhough he made the appointment in consultation with the Council of Elders.
“…Once you have security of tenure you can boldly take any decision in the interest of the nation, and that is the situation, he explained.
President Mahama joined other World leaders this week in an ongoing summit on Anti-corruption in the United Kingdom.
