In a poignant acceptance speech marking his re-election as Speaker of Ghana’s Ninth Parliament, Alban Bagbin struck a balance between gratitude, resolve, and a call to action.

Speaking during the dissolution of the Eighth Parliament on January 7, 2025, Bagbin reflected on the weight of his role and urged Ghanaians to take an active interest in the legislative process.

“To the good people of Ghana who continue to hope for a better Ghana, I urge you to support your Parliament and be interested and engaged with the work of Parliament,” he appealed.

Bagbin’s words resonate deeply, especially at a time when citizens’ engagement with governance is crucial.

As the country faces pressing issues like economic recovery, education reform, and youth employment, the Speaker’s call serves as a reminder that democracy thrives on collaboration between the government and the governed.

Outlining his immediate responsibilities, Bagbin highlighted the tasks ahead with clarity and purpose. “My first duty is to swear in the newly elected Members of Parliament, ensuring that they are fully empowered to begin their work for the people,” he stated.

He also emphasized the critical importance of overseeing the election of two Deputy Speakers, adding, “These duties are not mere formalities; they reflect the core functions of Parliament in safeguarding democracy and ensuring good governance.”

Bagbin’s leadership is marked by experience and a commitment to fairness. Having served as Speaker during the challenging tenure of the Eighth Parliament—a historic hung Parliament—he brings a wealth of knowledge to this new term.

Reflecting on his journey, he assured the chamber, “I carry with me the lessons of the past four years, and I pledge to navigate the complexities of this House with fairness and diligence.”

Acknowledging the weight of expectations placed upon him, Bagbin expressed both humility and resolve.

“The trust placed in me is both a privilege and a responsibility. I will strive to uphold the integrity of this House and the hopes of the Ghanaian people,” he said, his tone firm yet empathetic.
