The Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has apologised to Justice William Atuguba for announcing he was due to retire in July this year, which is not the case.
Mr Osei-Owusu, at a press conference on Tuesday 13 June while announcing the vetting date for Chief Justice nominee Justice Gloria Akuffo, said Justice Atuguba was due to retire in July 2017.
However, in his opening remarks to commence the vetting of Justice Akuffo as Ghana’s Chief Justice, Mr Osei-Owusu apologised for the misinformation as Justice Atuguba was rather due to retire in July 2018.
“On Tuesday I had a press briefing and I had said the most senior member of the bench, Justice Atuguba, was due to retire in a few weeks. I had operated under the misapprehension that he was retiring July this year but actually he is retiring July next year, so it’s not a few weeks as I put out. I apologise unreservedly for any discomfort that I have caused Mr Justice Atuguba,” the Bekwai MP said.
