Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to appoint not more than 50 ministers if elected President of Ghana in the upcoming polls.
Speaking at the NPP 2024 Manifesto Launch in Takoradi on August 18, 2024, Dr. Bawumia explained that he will implement an efficient governance system, with a key component being the reduction of the number of ministers of state.
He pledged to implement economic policies that will sustain Ghana’s recovering economy. Dr. Bawumia noted that while Ghana’s economy is rebounding, it is crucial to continue with policies that will lead to macroeconomic stability and improved economic conditions.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, we have experienced a major economic crisis and, with your support, weathered the storm. But we are not yet where we want to be. It is, therefore, very important to protect and expand our rebounding economy to attain and sustain macroeconomic stability with low inflation, low interest rates, exchange rate stability, and low budget deficits,” he stated.
He added that he will implement policies to encourage and stimulate the private sector to play a greater role in the economy.
“Enhancing the role of the private sector, along with fiscal and administrative decentralization, improving our systems, and the way our institutions function will lead to greater efficiency, cut waste, and ensure value for money in procurement.
"The move towards private sector provision of many public services would create fiscal space of at least 3% of GDP annually (GH¢30 billion). This represents a major paradigm shift. Additionally, an efficient system of governance will require even fewer ministers. Therefore, I would have no more than 50 ministers,” he explained.
He insisted that the 2024 NPP Manifesto prioritizes what the people of Ghana need, such as job creation for the youth.
