Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has defended his endorsement of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2024 general elections, despite the backlash.
Speaking at the Ofori Panin Palace in Abuakwa South on November 27 during a campaign event, Kufuor dismissed calls to refrain from making public endorsements.
Addressing the criticisms, Kufuor stated, “As a statesman, my opinions on national matters are grounded in experience and wisdom, which come with age.”
“This party paved the way for me to serve as President, and it remains my political home," he added.
The former president also praised Dr. Bawumia, describing him as a capable leader with a proven track record.
“Dr. Bawumia was part of the Bank of Ghana team during my administration. He performed exceptionally well during a period of economic hardship, playing a key role in restoring stability,” he noted.
Reaffirming his endorsement, Kufuor highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s leadership qualities and urged Ghanaians to support the NPP in the upcoming elections. “Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated the vision and competence needed to advance the nation,” he said.
Among those who have raised concerns is Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, flagbearer for the Movement for Change, who urged the former president to avoid public declarations due to his status as a statesman.
