IGP leaked tape: People calling for my punishment need to have their heads examined – COP Alex Mensah

Following the media's interception of the committee's findings in the plot to oust IGP Dampare, retired police officer COP Alex Mensah has shut down calls for him to be punished.

Responding to proposals made in the media by some prominent Ghanaians for him to face punishment despite his retirement, COP Alex Mensah retorted that individuals making those assertions must have their brains thoroughly checked.

According to him, he committed no offence contrary to reports and recommendations made by the committee.

"No sensible person can say that [Punishment and removal of benefit]. Anybody who makes that comment, we have to check his brains. He should be sent to the mental hospital and check his brains…Maybe his brain is not working well," he said.

It will be recalled that Security Analyst Adam Bonaa, in an interview on 3FM Sunrise on July 2, proposed that COP Alex Mensah be called back into the police service to face punishment.

He further opined that Mr. Mensah committed his offence while on active duty in the police service as an officer, and by doing so will serve as a deterrent for other offenders.

"As far as I am concerned, he committed the crime while in Service so you are trialed in Service and then whatever punishment [that is due], it is given to you. The reason is that it is supposed to serve as a deterrent for other service officers who might want to do the same," Dr. Bona explained.

Last year, COP Alex Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyedi, together with former Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu, were hauled before a parliamentary committee set up to probe a leaked audio tape.

Per the tape's contents, the four above-mentioned individuals plotted and conspired to oust the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

The committee chaired by the member of parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, after months-long investigation and questioning of all parties involved in the leaked tape, recommended that the three police officers face disciplinary action.

The committee's report indicated that the three police officers misconducted themselves.
