IGP must set up independent investigative c’tee – MP

Member of Parliament for Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Francis Addai Nimoh has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to set up an independent investigative committee, to look into the circumstances leading to the killing of two innocent civilians by police officers.

Police in Mampong in the Ashanti region have mistakenly shot and killed two people of the Mampong Midwifery Training College.

The incident happened at dawn on Wednesday February 10, 2016, killing Francis Benneh, a teacher at the Midwifery and Health Assistants Training School (HATS) in the town and his brother.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police, ASP Yusif Mohammed Tanko said the police had a distress call about a robbery incident at Mampong.

He said the police, on arriving at the scene spotted the two brothers on their motorcycle and fired at them, believing they were robbers fleeing arrest.

The unfortunate incident threw the entire Mampong township into a state of shock and since the deceased were guiltless.

Speaking to Kasapa News, Hon. Francis Addai Nimoh who expressed his condolence to the bereaved family stated that he’ll not leave the unfortunate incident lying down but will ensure that whoever is complicit in this crime is brought to book.

“This is really an unfortunate loss; the only way this family which has lost two innocent people will be at peace is to put out there the whole facts of the case and also ensuring that justice is done”.

Hon. Addai Nimoh added that his checks indicate the four police officers who are involved in the murder are not currently working as they are distressed.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the two have been deposited at the Mampong Government Hospital.
