Family of the 32-year-old commercial driver Isaac Asuah, who died in police cell at Dunkwa, in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, to investigate circumstances surrounding his demise.

Family head, Agya Kwesi Opoku allege the suspect was brutalized by the police upon his arrest which has resulted in his death, insisting the matter should not be swept under the carpet.

“I am told he was beaten by the police who came to arrest him…..he was not sick when they came to arrest him how come he can just get to the police station and die like that”, he quizzed when mynewsgh.com reached him via telephone.

“We are meeting as a family and will proceed to Accra to meet the IGP to call for thorough investigations. You cannot end the life of a bread winner like that. We need to know what killed my hardworking nephew”, he stressed.

Dankwa Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Dela Dzansi however denied claims the suspect was brutalized and later died in custody as a result of the beatings he was subjected to.

He disclosed that he was in detention and at about 1am on Saturday, his cell mates drew the attention of the counter NCO that he was restless and therefore needed some attention.

“We immediately arranged for a vehicle and rushed him to the Dunkwa Government Hospital but he died on admission. It is not true he was beaten. When the arrested him he was not in handcuffs because he cooperated with the police……I will not be able to tell the exact cause of death until postmortem is conducted. He was not showing any signs of sickness when we arrested him”, he revealed.
