Tamale, Dec. 16, GNA- Professor Clifford Tagoe, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana has urged workers to embrace the distance education programme to enable them to access university courses. He said through distance education, workers could improve on their grades, irrespective of where they were stationed but however warned that, academic standards would not be lowered for students undertaking the distance education programme.
Prof. Tagoe said this in an interview with the GNA when he paid a visit to the Tamale campus of the Workers College to find out the infrastructural problems facing the college. Mr. John Minlah, Director of Finance, Legon and Dr. Daniel Odouro-Mensah, Director of the Institute of Adult Education accompanied the Vice-Chancellor on his inspection tour of the facilities at the various colleges.
The Vice-Chancellor had already visited the Ho, Koforidua, Sunyani, Kumasi and Bolgatanga Workers Colleges to inspect their facilities. He said a large number of people had applied to undertake the distance education programme at the various workers colleges but only a few could be admitted because of the lack of classroom infrastructure. He noted that all the Workers colleges were confronted with the problems of infrastructure and other logistics and said an amount of about 150 million cedis had being given to the Suyani Workers college to enable it upgrade its facilities.
Prof. Tagoe called on Northern intellectuals to accept postings to their places of birth to help improve upon the living conditions of their people.
"Until the indigenes of the Northern Ghana come back and contribute to the area's development; advocacy for concessions from politicians will not work", he added.
