Ibrahim Dossey (24.11.1972 - 9.12.2008

Ghanaian goalkeeper Ibrahim Dossey has been laid to rest in the Romanian town of Hrisova.

The 1992 Olympic bronze medallist, who most recently played for Romanian second division side Targoviste, died in a Bucharest hospital on Tuesday, aged 36.

He was buried in the Muslim cemetery in the small town after an emotional prayer service by the local Imam on Thursday.

Hundreds of officials, players and fans from the Romanian football fraternity attended the ceremony.

His four-year-old daughter paid her final moving tribute which left most people at the ceremony in tears.

He was carried to the cemetery by players of the Euro-Africa academy before he was buried shrouded in a white cloth.

Dossey sustained serious head injuries in a car accident in September near the mountain resort of Breaza, north of Bucharest and had been in coma since then.

He recently regained consciousness and there had been hopes he would be transferred to Klagenfurt, Austria, for treatment but funds could not be raised in time for the treatment.

He suffered a heart attack, however, on Tuesday morning and doctors were unable to resuscitate him.

Born in Accra in 1972, Dossey moved to Romania eight years ago, where he played for FC Brasov, Rapid Bucharest, Unirea Sannicolau Mare and Pandurii Targu Jiu.

Dossey was a key member of Ghana's historic under-23 team that won Africa's first Olympic football medal, at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.

He agreed a two-year contract extension with Targoviste just days before he was involved in the accident.

His wife and daughter, who were also in the car, escaped unhurt.
