Identification exercise in Winneba facing difficulties

Winneba(C/R), July 10, GNA- The constant breakdown of Mobile Registration Workshop machines ( MRW), being used for the National Identification exercise, as a result of pressure and inadequate personnel, was affecting the smooth operation of the exercise in the Effutu Municipality.

Mr. Seth Emmanuel Panwum, supervisor of the exercise in the Winneba Area, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Winneba on Wednesday.

He has therefore appealed to the residents to exercise restraint and cooperate with the registration officers while efforts were made to rectify the problems.

Mr. Panwum said six of the machines that had broken down were being worked on by the technicians. He said standby operators of the machines were however needed to support the operations in case of any eventuality. Mr. Panwum attributed the lack of communication between him and the registration centres as some of the challenges affecting the operation of the exercise.

He gave the assurance that officials of the National Registration exercise would do their best to rectify the various problems hampering the operation of the programme. According to him, most of the people in the municipality have not been registered and appealed to the authorities to extend the period for the registration.

He said apart from three registration centres that have registered between 100 and 124 people, most centres registered between 24 and 56 a day, due to the fact that most of the operators were not very fast on the laptops.

Meanwhile a visit to most of the registration centres by the Ghana News Agency the in municipality indicated that there were long queues as early as 0400 hours. At the Social Welfare Centre, residents who went to register were disappointed, due to the breakdown of the machine, after they had waited in the queue for a very long time. At the Fire Service Station Centre, some angry residents who claimed they had been in the queue for some long hours picked up a quarrel with the registration officers at the time that the GNA was there.
