The Minister in charge of Government Communication, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, believes that the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, does not need to commit any wrongdoing to be replaced.
According to him, the president has the authority to change the IGP if he believes the police service requires new leadership and a fresh direction.
Ofosu Kwakye expressed this view during an interview with Accra-based Channel 1 Television.
“That decision falls within the purview of the president. Conventionally, the heads of all security agencies are replaced when there is a change of government, and I don’t think there is any issue with that. I am not sure what the president intends to do in this regard, but if it happens, I don’t think anyone will be surprised. It would not be against the norm,” he said.
“I don’t have any personal views about him. As of now, I am not aware of any specific wrongdoing on his part. However, he does not need to have done anything wrong to be replaced.
"If he is replaced, it will not be because he has committed any offense but simply because the president may feel that a new direction is needed at the police headquarters or within the leadership of the police service,” he added.
