Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor as ineffective and incapable of combating corruption.
In an interview on Onua FM on May 22, 2024, he claimed to have anticipated the law's shortcomings before its enactment.
Nketiah argued that the legislation's nature made it ineffective from the start.
He accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of hastily establishing the office to present a facade of fighting corruption, despite being aware of the law's flaws.
"When they introduced the Special Prosecutor law, I said if you use this law to appoint the Special Prosecutor, they won't be able to arrest even a housefly. The law is flawed, so any appointment based on it would be ineffective.
"Nana Akufo-Addo knew the law was inadequate but wanted to deceive Ghanaians into thinking he was combating corruption with that system.
"Akufo-Addo and Bawumia's approach to fighting corruption and 'galamsey' resembles a hunter who claimed to have shot some thieves just to stop the community from pursuing them," onuaonline.com quoted him as saying.
He also criticized Martin Amidu, the former Special Prosecutor accusing him of participating in Akufo-Addo's anti-corruption "charade."
"Martin Amidu cannot be exempted from the ongoing charade. How can you claim you were coerced into doing certain things against your will and then resign, calling the President 'Mother serpent of corruption'? Would you have written a letter to the 'Mother serpent of corruption' if you were Amidu?
"Didn't Martin Amidu say he was being pressured to do something to protect Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, which he refused to do, leading to his resignation? So, the government is actually fighting against those combating corruption and malfeasance.
"He fought Amidu and Agyebeng. The NDC has been silent on this because we are fed up and have realized that the entire fight against corruption is a charade," he stated.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has submitted a petition to the Chief Justice for the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
The petition was filed by the inaugural SP Martin Amidu, who has accused Agyebeng of procurement breaches and abuse of office.
Agyebeng was appointed Amidu's successor in 2021.
Over the past three years, Amidu has consistently criticized Agyebeng regarding his leadership style and other operational matters.
