General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has asked the Electoral Commission to make preparations for Ghanaians in the diaspora to vote in the next District Assembly and unit committee member’s elections.
The Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court Monday 18, December 20 17 ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to implement the Representation of the People Amendment Act (ROPAA) 2006 (Act699), which gives Ghanaians in the diaspora the right to vote, within 12 months.
Per the court order, the EC must operationalize the Act by laying a constitutional provision (CI) before Parliament to set out the modalities for the implementation of the Act.
Speaking to Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive, General Secretary for the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketia explained that the court indeed ordered the EC to implement the Representation of the People Amendment Act (ROPAA) 2006 (Act699), which gives Ghanaians in the diaspora the right to vote, within 12 months.
He said that the next election after the ROPAA implementation is the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections which is also nonpartisan.
“We are therefore expecting the EC to obey court’s ruling by putting measures in place to allow Ghanaians living in New York and elsewhere to vote for the District and District Assembly and unit committee members,” he opined.
