Inculcate reading habits into children - Director tells teachers

New Edubiase (Ash), Aug 03, GNA - An educationist has appealed to teachers to inculcate the habit of reading in children at the early stages of their education using modern techniques of teaching reading. Mr Robert K. Amoako, the Executive Director of the Ghana Book Trust (GBT), attributed the fallen standard of education in the country to children's inability to read and understand what they read. He was speaking at the opening of a two-week workshop on the teaching of reading skills for 256 primary school teachers in the Adansi South District on Tuesday.

"If a child develops interest in reading at the early stages of his or her education, such a child grows to become a good communicator and a learner".

Mr Amoako said as part of GBT's effort to improve upon reading skills, it had supplied over 140,000 books to all schools in the district.

This year, he said, the Trust will supply about 66,240 library books mostly in Twi to all schools in the district and commended the District Education Directorate for supporting library projects in the district.

Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyina, Adansi South District Director of Education, expressed gratitude to the GBT for sponsoring the reading programme since 2003.

He said GBT and its affiliates had spent over 578 million cedis on the reading project in the district this year.
