Indian writer donates books

Sunyani March 22, GNA- Four institutions in Sunyani Municipality on Thursday received 60 reading books worth about 20 million cedis from Mrs. Pam Handa, an Indian writer and member of the Ghana International Women's club.

The beneficiaries were Twene Amanfo Secondary Technical School, Sunyani Secondary School, Sunyani Polytechnic and Sunyani Library Board. Mr. Saarah Mensah, former Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, presented the books on behalf of Mrs. Handa to the beneficiaries. He said Mrs. Handa "has great affection for the region and remembers to contribute her quota to the people, as she once taught at Sunyani Polytechnic whilst her husband, Mr. P. K. Handa, a physician, worked at the Sunyani government hospital."

Madam Georgina Boakye, head mistress of Twene Amanfo Secondary Technical School thanked Mrs. Handa for the gesture, which she said was timely to replenish the school library.

She said the school had launched an appeal to some writers and NGOs to help stock the library with books to encourage and improve reading among the students. The headmistress gave assurance that the books would be put to good use for the benefit of the students and appealed to other philanthropists to emulate Mrs. Handa. 22 March 07
