The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has emphasized that no Member of Parliament is immune to arrest, following an attempt by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to apprehend Ernest Yaw Kumi, the MP for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, on March 7.

According to the minister, the operation was carried out by ten NIB operatives in three official pick-up vehicles and was based on a valid court order. He urged the public not to interpret the incident as an abuse of power, stressing that the agency was acting within its legal mandate.

The attempted arrest has triggered strong reactions, particularly from Minority lawmakers, who have raised concerns over its implications for parliamentary privileges and the treatment of elected officials.

The Asawase MP was answering questions on the floor of Parliament in relation to the attempted arrest of the Akwatia MP.

Further responses from Kumi and other political figures are expected as the situation unfolds.
